Places to eat on St Helena Island

If you're planning on visiting St Helena one day, or maybe just a little curious about what the food offerings are on the Island, we created this for you. During our visit back home in August 2024, we visited and stuffed ourselves silly eathing at as many of the wonderful and varied places to eat on St Helena as we could. Listed below are the places on St Helena where you can enjoy meals or takeaways. Listed in no particular order, they showcase where you can expereince traditional dishes, or grab a quick bite like locals.

Ann’s place

A true St Helena institution. Ann’s Place is legendary, and an absolute must-visit place to eat. Open daily for lunch and dinner, it serves up a fantastic array of fresh fish dishes and hearty meat options, always in generous portions. You can enjoy a meal in a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere or as takeaway. Reservations are recommended, especially on weekends when it gets busy. We particularly loved their fish fingers—crisp, flavorful, and unforgettable. We really appreciated that Ann’s was open every day, and have enjoyed many wonderful meals here.

St Helena Coffee Shop

Situated just pass the Arch with a calming seaview, the coffee shop is another must visit place to eat on the island, and a personal favourite. Open for lunch Wednesdays through Saturday's, it offers a delightful variety of cooked dishes–from classic sandwiches to daily seasonal specials, all prepared fresh. Also don’t miss the opportunity to try their local coffee from the Rosemary Gate estate—it’s a treat in itself.

Mantis St Helena

As part of the Mantis St Helena hotel, you can book a meal within the restaurant. It’s a more formal dining experience, ideal for special occasions or when you’re in the mood for something a bit fancy. Offering a daily menu with a mixture of local and international influenced dishes, reservations are required.

Mylyn’s Cuisine

Offering a mix of local takeaway favourites, alongside Asian-inspired dishes. While we weren’t entirely sure when they opened, we believe it’s open on weekends and possibly some evenings. Located at the top of Jamestown, see the sign and head through the door to the back of the house, it has a set menu to order from.

Frankies

Open on weekends from the corner of the Grand Parade, Frankies serves classic takeaway meals like battered fish, curries, and fishcakes. You’ll also find Saint specialties like coconut fingers alongside milkshakes and ice cream. The menu changes weekly, so it’s always worth checking what’s on offer.

Philly's Food Truck

Philly’s is a popular lunchtime and weekend stop, often found serving from the Grand Parade. The menu changes frequently but includes hearty options like T-bone steaks, BBQ ribs, tuna fishcakes, burgers, and fried chicken. Check daily to see what is being served, and be sure to order early, as their dishes tend to sell out quickly!

Arch Gate Takeaway

From a window to the left of the Arch, you can grab takeaway favorites on weekends. The menu focuses on burgers, fried chicken, and chips, alongside weekly specials. We always go for their Hawaiian burger with pineapple—delicious! A reliable spot for a satisfying takeaway

Consulate Hotel Cafe

Another St Helena institution, there is a cafe within the hotel which seems to be open daily. Offering a selection of baked good and hot drinks in a relaxed setting. With plush seating throughout, it’s a great spot to unwind with a hot drink and a sweet treat.

The Sandwich Bar

Located on the ground floor of the Market, The Sandwich Bar is a go-to for a satisfying lunch during the week. With an extensive selection of classic sandwiches, along with daily specials like pea soup and chutney, everything is made fresh to order. The portions are large, and there’s seating available if you want to enjoy your lunch while watching the world go by.

Dan’s Bakery

Next to the Standard Bar, Dan’s Bakery is a small bakery offers freshly baked goods and drinks. From classic lemon drizzle cake and blondies to local favorites like boiled pudding, the offerings change daily. Open until late afternoon, the bakery also has a seating area where you can relax and enjoy your baked goodies.

Sunray’s

Every Wednesday (weather permitting), Sunray’s serves up soft and crispy freshly fried local fish at the St Helena Yacht Club. You can pair your meal with a cold drink from the Yacht Club bar as you enjoy the habour view and cool sea breeze. Their crispy fried conger and tuna, served with crisps, is simply divine.

Wellington House

For a more traditional island experience, Wellington House offers home-cooked meals in a cozy, sit-down setting. Available by pre-booking only, you can work out the menu when making your reservation. Be sure to bring your own wine or beer to complete the meal.

Skips

Operating from the seaside during our visit, Skips is the go-to spot for weekend sundowners, offering cold beers, cocktails, and ice cream. They also serve takeaway food, with the menu changing weekly. Includes outdoor seating to watch the sunset while enjoying your meal.

Joshie’s

Located on the 'brow' in Half Tree Hollow, Joshie’s offers indoor and outdoor seating, along with takeaway. Open for lunch throughout the week and Saturdays. Offering daily specials alongside a large menu ranging from a full english breakfast, sandwiches, fried fish and more. We really enjoyed their ice coffee while relaxing and watching and waving to the world as it when by.

Get Carter’s

Located in the Mule Yard, offering delicious pizza’s on the weekends. Unfortunately it was closed during our visit due to the owners being on holiday. However, we’ve sampled their pizza before, and it’s delicious. Just be sure to order early as they sell out fast!

Blue Lantern

Opening later in the week and on weekends, offering a mix of fish and meat dishes. Pre-ordering and reservations are a must.

Orange Tree Oriental Restaurant

Offering asian inspired dishes in a sit down environment. Call ahead to check opening times or to make a reservation.

Farm Lodge

Pre-book for lunch or dinner in a beautiful country farm setting. The menu features a mixture of local favourites, accompanied by local coffee grown on the farm.

The Star

Primarily a supermarket, The Star also offers lunchtime takeaways like sandwiches, baked goods, and other dishes throughout the week. Be sure to check daily for what is available. You can also grab a cup of Solomon’s Estate locally grown coffee. It's excellent and a must do!
